Over 3M tourists visited Morocco in 2008 1H
Maghreb Arabe Presse
Rabat, Aug. 4 - Around 3.2 million tourists visited Morocco in the first half of 2008, a 12% rise compared with the same period of last year, revealed figures of the Department of Tourism. The French tourists topped the list with about 1.16 million tourists, followed by the Spanish (787,000), the British (170,000), the Italian (151,000), the Belgian (147,000), the German (123.000), and the Dutch (99,000). Despite the increase in tourists arrivals, tourist nights in classified hotels posted a 4% decrease, reaching some 8 million nights during the period January-June 2008 against 8.35 million during the same period of 2007. With the exception of the cities of Marrakech, Agadir, and Ouarzazate, that witnessed 8%, 9%, and 9% decreases respectively, all other tourist destinations received more tourists. Casablanca topped the list with 10%, followed by Tangier (+5%), Rabat and Fez (+4%). ...

Morocco among emerging markets that increasingly attract investors despite world crisis, UK paper
Maghreb Arabe Presse
London, July 29 - Morocco was cited among the emerging markets in the region of North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) that increasingly attract investors, despite the international crisis, said the British daily The Financial Times. Fund managers believe that Morocco, where political risk is low, offers good opportunities, noted the daily, adding that investor appetite for emerging markets is dwindling as worries about rising inflation and falling equity markets grow, particularly in China and India, while frontier markets such as Africa and the Middle East are still flavour of the month. "African markets are not immune to the doldrums in global stock markets but have not performed as badly as emerging markets such as India and China," said John Mackie, head of Africa funds at Stanlib Asset Management. ...

Morocco promotes rural tourism
magharebia
Morocco's tourism industry is undergoing significant change as part of its "Vision 2010" initiative to attract 10 million visitors by 2010. While the sector has traditionally focused on the beach vacation market, Morocco has begun targeting rural tourism in an effort to stimulate economic revival in remote areas and encourage expatriate Moroccans to both visit and invest in their homeland. Every year, Morocco receives between 150,000 and 200,000 tourists who are attracted by this kind of tourism. They go to areas in the Atlas, desert and the countryside. In June 2003, Morocco launched an initiative to develop this sector by preparing a comprehensive work plan to develop "tourist reception avenues" in remote areas such as Chefchaouen, Ifrane, Imouzzer, and Ida ou Tanane, as well as places which already see tourist activities but which need rehabilitation and support, such as Great Atlas, Rachidia Desert, Ouarzazate and Zagora. ...

Morocco set to promote tourism in 2008
Maghreb Arabe Presse
Tetouan (north), June 16 - Public and private tourism operators outlined, Sunday, their projects to promote the tourism sector in Morocco in 2008. At the closing ceremony of the 8th National tourism Forum, held on June 14-15, the two parties agreed to launch three regional development plans (Tangier, Tetouan Tamuda Bay and Meknès-Tafilalet) within the framework of Mada'In plan, which aims to upgrade cultural and seaside destinations. Biladi plan, which provides for creating eight new tourism areas with products and prices that meet the aspirations of local tourists, will be reinforced through bid for tenders for the second wave of stations. At the marketing level, Morocco will build customer loyalty of priority markets (France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Benelux), continue developing Eastern markets (Russia and Poland), and capture Japanese and Chinese markets, in addition to reinforcing multi-canal strategy of distribution through setting up a live sales Internet platform. ...

Property in Morocco: An Emerging Market
Nuwire Investor
The property market in Morocco, a North African country, is booming and property development is taking hold in a big way. Morocco is already beginning to garner notice from holidaymakers in Northern Europe, and its government’s plans to create more jobs and increase tourism by 2010 are likely to boost the economy and the property market in the next two years. Investors interested in getting in on a promising market before it peaks might want to give Morocco some thought. Located at the northern tip of Africa, Morocco is just a ferry ride away from southern Spain. It shares a border with Algeria to the east, its western edge is Atlantic coastline and the Mediterranean lies to the north. The country is slightly larger than the state of California, covering a total area of 446,550 square kilometers. Approximately 34.3 million people are estimated to live in the country by July 2008, and the population is growing at an estimated rate of approximately 1.5 percent, according to the CIA World Factbook. ...

Morocco Hosts Foreign Investors For New Desert Oasis Resort
Nubricks
While Morocco may not be a newcomer to the tourism trade, recent figures indicate that interest in the region is very much on the up with more people than ever before visiting the country. This has been spurred on by the rather adventurous Vision 2010, a plan to increase visitor numbers from the current recorded high of 7.4 million a year to over 10 million by 2010, with the Moroccan authorities already primed for action. We have seen a spate of new developments announced over the last few months, many of which have the direct backing of the Moroccan government as part of the Plan Azur. Notably a number of these ventures have targeted overseas investment parties from places such as Spain, with their obvious links to the region, who are stepping forward to join the party. Of the six master-planned beach resorts, the first Mediterranea Saida is due to open in May 2008 and will increase tourism bed capacity by 111,000 beds and generate nearly 200,000 jobs. ...

Maghreb Arabe Presse
London, Apr. 4 - Morocco has become one of the most appealing target to real estate promoters due to the major development projects set up since 2001, British "Global edge" said on Thursday. The company, which offers counseling to international real estate investors, underlined that since 2001, Morocco witnessed a huge leap in the field of tourism. Since the launch of the Azur plan (designed to build six new sea resorts in the country) and Vision 2010 (aims to attract ten million tourists by 2010), major real estate and infrastructure projects have been launched, mainly airports extensions, implementing the open Sky policy, the same source added, recalling that many low cost airline companies, such as EasyJet and Rayanair have decided to operate in Morocco. ...
